Our Areas of Research

Our research focuses on generating evidence-based insights that inform policy, strengthen institutions, and promote sustainable development. Through interdisciplinary approaches, we address critical challenges in biodiversity conservation, food systems, climate resilience, livelihoods, and environmental governance, supporting informed decision-making and long-term impact.

At BERC Nigeria, our research is grounded in evidence, community engagement, and policy relevance. We generate data-driven insights that strengthen biodiversity conservation, improve food systems, promote climate resilience, and advance inclusive development across Nigeria.

Sustinable diets

BERC’s research and projects promote an integrated, value-based system to maximize the nutritional, ecological, and livelihood potential of indigenous plants, strengthening efficient, resilient, and community-driven food systems in post-COVID Nigeria.

Climate Action

BERC’s research and projects address climate change and biodiversity loss by advancing community-led conservation and the sustainable use of indigenous plant species. We generate evidence on how indigenous plant conservation practices strengthen ecosystem and forest resilience and support climate adaptation and mitigation.

Agrobiodiversity

At BERC, our research explores the sustainable management of indigenous plant agrobiodiversity, emphasizing the integration of agroforestry and agroecology practices. We investigate how these approaches strengthen ecosystem and forest resilience, mitigate climate risks, and conserve biodiversity.

gender inclusion

BERC’s research recognizes women as the primary custodians of biodiversity and essential agents in its conservation. We focus on empowering women alongside men through community-led initiatives and capacity building on nature based solutions for sustainable management and protection ecosystems and indigenous plant species.
