“Intelligence is based on how efficient a species became at doing the things they need to survive.”
"By felling the trees which cover the tops and sides of mountains, men in all climates seem to bring upon future generations two calamities at once; want of fuel and a scarcity of water."
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

Biodiversity Education and Resource Centre (BERC) is a think tank, not-for-profit Centre. The Centre houses a network of scientists with the mandate of carrying out biodiversity research, education, and land rights issues in Nigeria. The Centre is at the forefront of providing empirical data for research and awareness on the sustainable utilization and conservation of Nigerian biological resources.
BERC’s research and projects demonstrate the link between the nutritional benefits of indigenous plants and the health of surrounding ecosystems and forests. By evidencing how indigenous plant biodiversity supports both human nutrition and environmental resilience, we emphasize the need for conservation and protection of these diverse species. BERC promotes an integrated, value-based system to maximize the nutritional, ecological, and livelihood potential of indigenous plants, strengthening efficient, resilient, and community-driven food systems in post-COVID Nigeria.
BERC’s research and projects address climate change and biodiversity loss by advancing community-led conservation and the sustainable use of indigenous plant species. We generate evidence on how indigenous plant conservation practices strengthen ecosystem and forest resilience and support climate adaptation and mitigation. Through targeted capacity building and integrated, value-based approaches, BERC empowers communities to conserve biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and build climate-resilient, community-driven food systems.
At BERC, our research explores the sustainable management of indigenous plant agrobiodiversity, emphasizing the integration of agroforestry and agroecology practices. We investigate how these approaches strengthen ecosystem and forest resilience, mitigate climate risks, and conserve biodiversity. By supporting community-led conservation initiatives and building local capacity, BERC promotes practical, value-driven solutions that empower communities to restore ecosystems, protect agrobiodiversity, and develop resilient, sustainable food systems.
BERC’s research recognizes women as the primary custodians of biodiversity and essential agents in its conservation. We focus on empowering women alongside men through community-led initiatives and capacity building on nature based solutions for sustainable management and protection ecosystems and indigenous plant species. By integrating gender-responsive approaches, BERC ensures that biodiversity conservation is strengthened, resilient, and benefits both people and living in harmony with nature.
